The Maids of Wilko

The Maids of Wilko

dir.

Andrzej Wajda

1979, 1 h 56 min

Having lost his friend, almost 40-year-old Wiktor Ruben visits his aunt and uncle in the countryside, where he spent his youth in a manor house in the company of ladies. A lot has changed since then. Julia gave birth to twin girls. Emancipated Jola got married. Fela died prematurely. Zosia and Kazia are not the same anymore either. Little Tunia has grown up into a beautiful young lady. Ruben’s visit, his memories and attempts to relive the past disturb the maids’ peace and expose their complicated life paths, tragedies and failures. The film is an excellent adaptation of a short story by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz.
