The life of Michał Toporny, a peasant’s son, who receives a good education and climbs the career ladder, straying further and further away from where he comes from. He leaves his wife and son and marries a girl from a good home, but their marriage doesn’t last long. When the new wife gets bored and finds herself a lover, Michał starts looking after his sons from both marriages. One day, he takes them to his home village.
