Hospital of the Transfiguration
The film is set at the onset of the Nazi occupation, in the isolated world of a psychiatric hospital. Dr Krauters values only surgical procedures; Dr Rygier believes in strict governance; and Dr Marglewski sees mental illness as a form of possession. Dr Nosilewska fled Austria after the Nazi annexation. Zygmunt Sekułowski is a writer seeking shelter in the hospital. A young, newly arrived doctor, Stefan, refuses to be a passive observer of the events unfolding around him. This moral treatise raises questions of responsibility in extreme circumstances.
