Director and screenwriter. Born in 1962 in Shymkent. In 1982, graduated from an aviation school in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, then continued his education at the Radiotechnical Department of the Electrotechnical Institute in Novosibirsk. In 1993, graduated from the Moscow Film School. Worked for nine years as a radio engineer for aviation company Aeroflot. Directed a couple of full-length documentaries. In 2008, released his feature debut, Tulpan. The film premiered at the 2008 Festival de Cannes and sparked a lot of interest receiving the prestigious award, Un Certain Regard.
