The main organizer of the Gdynia for Children section, held from 2004, is the Polish Filmmakers Association. For a couple of years, thanks to the revival of children film production, the section has presented the most recent achievements of this genre of the Polish cinema, short films awarded at the most important world film festivals and cinema feature films.
The young audience will see, among others, „Tarapaty” directed by Marta Karwowska, a film which last years was presented in the Visions Apart Competition and which has been seen by over 318 thousand people in cinemas. The programme also includes the most recent animated films for children, including films from the series „Jim and Screw”, „Basia”, „Żubr Pompik”, „Rodzina Treflików” or „Baśnie i bajki polskie”.
„Actions for the benefit of the film for the young audience, taken through the last few years by the film environment and the Polish Film Institute, have brought positive effects. The flywheel has been moved,” Andrzej Jasiewicz, the Chairman of the Circle of Filmmakers for Children and the Youth. “The audience have come back to cinemas to see Polish films, and our animated series are being sold to tens of tv channels throughout the world.”
„I value the Gdynia for Children section, which is left unnoticed by many Festival viewers. For 15 years, the children and the youth programme is seen by from 6 to 8 thousand viewers. Many of them come back to us as volunteers or participants of the Festival. This is why Gdynia for Children is not only a section accompanying the Festival but first and foremost, an important educational programme which shapes the youngest audience and enthuses with passion of cinema,” says Leszek Kopeć, the Director of the Polish Film Festival.
During the Festival, we will celebrate the 85th birthday of one of the most outstanding filmmakers for young viewers, Stanisław Jędryka. In relation to that, we will present his adventure film “Porwanie” from 1985 at the opening of the section. The programme of Gdynia for Children includes also a set of popular full-length Polish family films („Felix, Net i Nika oraz teoretycznie możliwa katastrofa” by Wiktor Skrzynecki, „Na tropach Bartka” by Janusz Łęski, „Skutki noszenia kapelusza w maju” by Krystyna Krupska-Wysocka, „Pan Samochodzik i praskie tajemnice” by Kazimierz Tarnas). The youngest will also see episodes of the popular series „Miś Fantazy”.
The educational character of the cycle Gdynia for Children will be emphasised by the specially prepared set „Film Education of Young Viewers”, comprised of animated films made by the winners of Legnicka Akademia Filmu Animowanego and the short film “Cinema Adventure” with participation of the students of American School in Gdynia.
Gdynia for Children are not only films by Polish filmmakers but also the works of foreign artists, from classics to contemporary films presented as part of World Cinema Panorama. Gdynia for Children involves also film workshops. This year, we offer dubbing workshops. Gdynia for Children is organized by the Polish Filmmakers Association in co-operation with the Pomeranian Film Foundation in Gdynia. The programme has been co-funded from the sources of the Polish Film Institute.
