Harry Ricks, an American writer, intending to cover over the bad impression related to a scandal which made him lose his job, moves from the USA to Paris. He does that also in order to be closer to his daughter, who has moved there together with her mother. Totally depressed, he accepts the position of the Russian mafia’s night watchman. His only task is to press the button when the bell rings. He hopes that the quietness of night will let him focus on writing his new novel. A sudden turn in his life will cause a love affair with Margit, who sets strange rules of their meetings.
