Szymek lives in a mining town. His father is a miner and his mother is a housewife. On his tenth birthday she gives Szymek a gingerbread heart. The boy takes it with him to a clay pit. There he meets the Old Man looking for his pipe. Szymek joins the search and when rain starts to pour, he helps the Old Man pull his cart out of the mud. On the way home he realises that he’s lost the gift from his mum. He looks for it but can’t find it anywhere…
