Born in 1969 into a Polish-French family. As a teenager, he directed amateur films. Graduate of the Paris Sorbonne (Cinema Studies Department) and the Directing Department at LA FEMIS. He worked as assistant on the sets of feature, advertising and television films. Having made several short features (“DZIEŃ KOŃCA LATA”, “RANCH W NEVADZIE”, “MOTOR”), he started working on documentaries (among others, “CELA”, “CIEŃ NA DUSZY”, “PRZESŁUCHANIA”, “PIOSENKA I ŻYCIE”). For Steven Spielberg’s Foundation, “Survivors of the Shoah”, he filmed accounts of over 80 people who survived the Holocaust. He also directed several documentaries about artists (“W CIENIU DON GIOVANNIEGO”, “PO DRUGIEJ STRONIE PŁÓTNA”, “SZTUKA MILCZENIA”). In 2010, Rafael directed his first feature film debut “THE MOLE”, starring Borys Szyc, Marian Dziędziel and Wojciech Pszoniak. The film was premiered at the 36. Gdynia Film Festival (award for Marian Dziędziel’s supporting role), and its international career started at IFF in Montreal where Borys Szyc received an award for his leading role. In January 2012, Rafael Lewandowski was granted with the “Polityka” Passport Award. He is currently completing his work on a full-length documentary (“MINKOWSKI / SAGA”) and also working on other feature film projects.
