Detailed Gdynia Industry programme available at: https://festiwalgdynia.pl/en/gdynia-industry/
DOES THE FIRST STEP HAVE TO BE THE HARDEST? – FINANCIAL AND SYSTEMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEBUTANTS. HOW TO WORK WELL IN A TEAM? HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WISELY ON AND OFF FILM SET
The number of paths to a full-length feature debut has increased over the past few years. Depending on whether young filmmakers want to create art-house cinema, middle-of-the-road or go strictly commercial, they have several options to choose from: collaboration with a streaming service, the Munk Studio, a commercial producer or applying for a grant under Priority II: Feature Film Production and Priority VI: Full-length Feature Film Production – Micro-Budget ‘First Film’. What are the specifics and pros of each path, and what challenges do young filmmakers face when deciding on one? That will be discussed by filmmakers.
Artistic and organisational struggles are not all the challenges young filmmakers face. There is also the human factor – building authority and creating healthy, mature and open relationships on set and during the preparation and development. In the second part of the panel, the directors, producers and a psychologist from the Centre for Performance Psychology will look at the challenges that young (and not only!) filmmakers most often face, in their work. Netflix and the Young Producers Section of the Polish Producers Alliance are this section’s partners.
WORKING WITH A SALES AGENT – OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF POLISH FILMS
Polish films are part of European cinema. They enrich it with a unique style and tone. How to ensure that domestic productions are included in the catalogue of a sales agent so that they are watched not only by festival audiences but also cinemagoers in Germany, Spain or France? The presence of Polish films in international circulation, current trends in the European markets, and how to win the interest of a foreign audience in our story – all that will be discussed by sales agents invited to the PFF. Polish Producers Alliance and Creative Europe Desk Polska are the event’s partners.
EURIMAGES REFRESHED INTRODUCING THE FUND’S NEW PROJECT SELECTION PROCESS – KEYNOTE BY SUSAN NEWMAN-BAUDAIS, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EURIMAGES
During a meeting with the Managing Director of the European co-production fund Eurimages, Susan Newman-Baudais, you will learn about the updated rules on calls for proposals and how to prepare an application to succeed. Eurimages is a Council of Europe fund established in 1988 to support, among other things, the co-production of European films. Poland has been a member of Eurimages since 1991. Polish Producers Alliance is the event’s partner.
AI IN FILMMAKING: CHALLENGES, CHANCES AND RISKS
A panel on the new era of the film industry. Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities but also posing challenges and risks. In this discussion, we will explore the potential of AI while considering the ethical, creative and social aspects associated with its increasing importance in the film industry. PFI and the Polish Screenwriters’ Guild are the debate’s partners.
DISTRIBUTION OF POLISH FILMS: WHERE ARE OUR AUDIENCES AND HOW TO REACH THEM? HOW TO HELP THE DISTRIBUTION OF POLISH FILMS GROW STRONG. One of the hot topics in film industry is decreased attendance at Polish films in 2022 and 2023. How to make audiences return to buy tickets for domestic titles? The experts invited to the panel will discuss whether cinema distribution is always the best way to reach the audience and how to develop habits in the audience members so they would watch Polish films often and eagerly The panel also aims to name the industry’s most pressing challenges and risks and have an in-depth conversation about the future of distribution. The partners of this day of Gdynia Industry are: Polish Producers Alliance, Black Photon and Fisheye.
This year’s Gdynia Industry wouldn’t be complete without the well known meeting from the “Face to Face” cycle – featuring the PFI Director Radosław Śmigulski – where we will also discuss the PFI Operational Programmes for 2024, and the yearly Polish Filmmakers Association Forum and the Festival Summary Debate.
CONSULTATIONS AND INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS
CO-PRODUCTION OPPORTUNITITES WITH TVP Telewizja Polska invites producers and filmmakers to a meeting with representatives of the Film and Series Creation Agency and the TVP Cinema Distribution at which the options for collaboration with Telewizja Polska in terms of film production will be presented, especially in the context of co-productions co-financed from the Cinema Fund (rules for application and granting funds) and theatrical distribution of feature films.
COPYRIGHT WITHOUT SECRETS – CONSULTATIONS WITH EXPERTS FROM THE UNION OF AUDIOVISUAL AUTHORS AND PRODUCERS Film matter is often very complicated, and the intricacies of copyright law can keep anyone up at night, even the most experienced filmmaker or producer. Do you have questions about your future or current productions? Would you like to know your rights? Are you wondering when streaming services will start paying royalties to creators? Then come to our expert consultations! At individual meetings, specialists from the Polish Filmmakers Association – Union of Audiovisual Authors and Producers will answer all questions, even the most persistent ones, concerning royalties (including those from the Internet), collective management and copyright law.
ANALYSIS OF LEGAL ISSUES IN CONTRACTS IN THE FILM PRODUCTION PROCESS The meeting will let you learn about the most common mistakes in contracts with persons and entities involved in creating, producing and distributing a film, taking into account the Operational Programmes guidelines. During the meeting, we will discuss how to transfer copyrights correctly, secure the film production process in legal terms and what to pay special attention to when signing contracts with Filmmakers.
