A documentary record of an unusual conversation with Andrzej Wajda, recorded exactly half a century after the premiere of the film Ashes and Diamonds. In a narration full of anegdotes, the director unveils the backstage of making the film, tells about the screenwriting cooperation with Jerzy Andrzejewski, work on the filmshooting site, the most famous scenes and problems with censorship, he recalls actors – Zbigniew Cybulski, Bogumił Kobiela, Adam Pawlikowski – and their co-workers.

The film is the first part of a documentary cycle entitled “Masters’ Masterpieces”, devoted to the most outstanding works of the Polish cinematography and their creators. The filmmakers used extracts of the film “Ashes and Diamonds” directed by Andrzej Wajda, the drawings and drafts of the director, stills by Wiesław Zdort and archive materials of Telewizja Polska.
