In Desert and Wilderness

In Desert and Wilderness

dir.

Gavin Hood

2001, 1 h 51 min

A screen adaptation of the last finished novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
Nel was modelled on his friend’s 10-year-old adopted daughter, whereas
the original engineer Tarkowski was engineer Mieczysław Gieniusz, who
worked at the construction of the Suez Canal. The only son of Gieniusz
was abducted by slave traders and he has never been seen again.
Sienkiewicz used his story when writing “In Desert and Wilderness” and
Gavin Hood successfully transferred it onto the screen.
