In the years 1656–1660, Swedes invaded Poland. Andrzej Kmicic, ensign of Orsha, is engaged to Oleńka Billewiczówna and initially sides with the Radziwiłłs, a powerful magnate family collaborating with the Swedes. Accused of treason by the gentry and his fiancée, he soon begins to understand that the Radziwiłłs are not concerned with the good of the homeland but with their best interest and assuming the Polish throne. Kmicic kidnaps Prince Bogusław Radziwiłł to take the traitor before King Jan Kazimierz and thus redeem himself.
