Panels and Debates

DOES THE FIRST STEP HAVE TO BE THE HARDEST? – FINANCIAL AND SYSTEMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEBUTANTS. HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WISELY ON AND OFF FILM SET.

The number of paths to a full-length feature debut has increased over the past few years. Depending on whether young filmmakers want to create art-house cinema, middle-of-the-road or go strictly commercial, they have several options to choose from: collaboration with a streaming service, the Munk Studio, a commercial producer or applying for a grant under Priority II: Feature Film Production and Priority VI: Full-length Feature Film Production – Micro-Budget ‘First Film’. What are the specifics and pros of each path, and what challenges do young filmmakers face when deciding on one? That will be discussed by producers, directors and Łukasz Kłuskiewicz from the Netflix streaming service.
Artistic and organisational struggles are not all the challenges young filmmakers face. There is also the human factor – building
authority and creating healthy, mature and open relationships on set and during the preparation and development. In the second part of the panel, the directors, producers and a psychologist from the Centre for Performance Psychology will look at the challenges that young (and not only!) filmmakers most often face, in their work, analyse specific issues. Organised in partnership with Netflix and The Young Producers Section of the Polish Producers Alliance.

WORKING WITH A SALES AGENT – OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF POLISH FILMS
Polish films are part of European cinema. They enrich it with a unique style and tone. How to ensure that domestic productions are included in the catalogue of a sales agent so that they are watched not only by festival audiences but also cinemagoers in Germany, Spain or France? The presence of Polish films in international circulation, current trends in the European markets, and how to win the interest of a foreign audience in our story – all that will be discussed by sales agents invited to the PFF. Organised in partnership with the Polish Producers Alliance, Creative Europe Desk Polska.

EURIMAGES REFRESHED INTRODUCING THE FUND’S NEW PROJECT SELECTION PROCESS – KEYNOTE BY SUSAN NEWMAN-BAUDAIS, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EURIMAGES

During a meeting with the Managing Director of the European co-production fund Eurimages, Susan Newman-Baudais, you will learn about the updated rules on calls for proposals and how to prepare an application to succeed. Eurimages is a Council of Europe fund established in 1988 to support, among other things, the co-production of European films. Poland has been a member of Eurimages since 1991. Organised in partnership with the Polish Producers Alliance.

AI IN FILMMAKING: CHALLENGES, CHANCES AND RISKS

A panel on the new era of the film industry. Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities but also posing challenges and risks. In this discussion, we will explore the potential of AI while considering the ethical, creative and social aspects associated with its increasing importance in the film industry. Organised in partnership with the Polish Film Institute and the Polish Screenwriters’ Guild.

DISTRIBUTION OF POLISH FILMS: WHERE ARE OUR AUDIENCES AND HOW TO REACH THEM?

Decreased attendance at Polish films in 2022 and 2023 prompts the question of how to make audiences return to buy tickets for domestic titles. The experts invited to the panel will discuss whether cinema distribution is always the best way to reach the audience and how to develop habits in the audience members so they would watch Polish films often and eagerly. Representatives of distribution companies, cinemas, streaming services and producers will comment on the box office results of the first half of the year and look at audience trends and habits. The panel also aims to name the industry’s most pressing challenges and risks and have an in-depth conversation about the future of distribution. Organised in partnership with the Polish Producers Alliance, Black Photon and Fisheye.

This year’s programm of Gdynia Industry will also include ‘Face To Face’ meeting with PFI Director Radosław Śmigulski and presentation of Operational Programmes For 2024, and the annual Polish Filmmakers Association Forum and the Debate summarising the festival.
