40th Gdynia Film Festival. Industry Events

It has become a tradition that the Gdynia Film Festival screenings are complemented by numerous meetings and special events. A handful of conferences and debates will be an opportunity for the Polish filmmakers environment to meet up – including not only the oldest industry event, that is the Polish Filmmakers Association Forum but also discussion panels devoted to the promotion overseas, development, the film for children, postproduction and public media.

DEBATE BY “FORBES”: PUBLIC OR POLITICAL MEDIA?

The public media in Poland need two important things: stable financing, which would free them from the toxic competition with commercial media and separation from politicians. Whereas the latter is possible only if the first is provided. That is because stable financing means also elimination of discretionary system, which is something the politicians really love.

POLISH FILMMAKERS ASSOCIATION FORUM

The Gdynia fora of the Polish Filmmakers Association – the biggest one in the country – for years have been a place of heated debates over the most important issues related to the filmmaking community. A decade after the Law on Cinematography was passed, the Polish cinema is in a great shape. This success was possible thanks to all the members of a filmmaking community, however, it shouldn’t lull us into a false sense of security. There is still a lot to do in the sphere of law and organisation! We invite you to join the discussion.

PANEL: “SELLING POINTS: HOW TO PROMOTE POLISH FILMS ABROAD?”
The Oscar victory of “Ida” galvanised Polish filmmaking community and only proved that indeed sky is the limit as far as the promotion of Polish cinema abroad and its global success are concerned. At the same time, it put a question mark, especially among young producers and sales agents, over which strategy in the foreign promotion of Polish film may be most effective. Attempting to answer this question, the Gdynia Film Festival prepared the “Selling Points” panel in partnership with the Creative Europe Desk Poland. The meeting aims at discussing how to position and talk about Polish cinema and adjust the strategy to a specific project so that the film made in the country on the Vistula River would reach all the latitudes and be widely acclaimed by the audience and critics.

“10 YEARS OF EMOTIONS” – FILM SCREENING

Ten years ago, those who remembered the achievements of the Polish Film School or “the cinema of moral anxiety” were wringing their hands: in 2005, only 800 000 tickets for Polish films were sold. Ten years later, the Polish cinema gathered in screening rooms over 11 million people. How did this happen and what were the feelings of the founders and employees of PISF or the creators of the films from the last decade? Jerzy Śladkowski goes behind the scenes of the events that led to the first Polish Oscar for the best foreign language film (and more than 2700 other awards for the Polish filmmakers during the last couple of years).
