Director, screenwriter, and actor. He has also been painting and writing poetry. He spent his childhood in Prague, where his school friends were Miloš Forman, Václav Havel and Ivan Passer. He studied Ethnography at the Warsaw University. Co-author of the screenplay for “Innocent Sorcerers” by Wajda and “Knife in the Water” by Polański. Graduated in Directing at the Film School in Łódź. Emigrated from Poland in the late 60s. For “Le Depart” he won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival (1967). Winner of numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival (1978) for “The Shout”, the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes International Film Festival (1982) for “Moonlighting”, and the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival (1985) for “The Lightship”.At the “Film Summer” Film and Art Festival, Warsaw 2009, the screenplay of “Knife in the Water” was considered the best one in the history of Polish cinema. In 2010 his film “Essential Killing” was awarded Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.
