Joanna

World War II. Saved from a roundup, 7-year-old Róża is found by a waitress Joanna. The woman decides to take care of the girl. Thanks to necessary precautions nobody suspects anything. Unexpectedly, in the middle of the night, her apartment is raided by Kripo, two Polish policemen and a German Major. Luckily, Róża hides. Joanna catches the eye of a German officer who borrows her French edition of Stendhal’s “The Red and the Black”. When after a few days he comes back to return the book, a silent cough comes from the kitchen, giving out the presence of the girl…
