Grodno, eastern borderland of pre-war Poland. On the 1st of September 1939 German planes bomb the city and one of the bombs hits Leoś, Ewelina and Tadek’s school. The world of carefree childhood, playfulness and first infatuations comes to an end in both a literal and symbolic way. Leoś is twelve, a Jewish boy, fascinated with the Polish independence tradition.

By virtue of the Soviet-German treaty, the Red Army enters Poland on the 17th of September 1939, planning to take Grodno over on the 20th of September. The city starts a hopeless fight. Small military detachments are supported by civilians, especially school pupils. It is the children who courageously defend the city, falling victim to the awful cruelty of the occupiers.
