Autumn of 1977. Gary Gilmore is sentenced to death for murdering two men. His trial gains prominence when the accused, of his own accord, requests hastening his execution, at the same time asking his barristers not to file an appeal to the court. He is the first convict to be executed after the Supreme Court restored the death penalty. Gary’s request to execute the sentence surprises his brothers and his ill mother, Bessie. Mikal and Frank want to meet Gary to persuade him to change his mind and sign documents enabling the suspension of his execution. Based on true story, the film production of HBO was directed by Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness, Total Eclipse, Washington Square).
