The Saragossa Manuscript
Wojciech Jerzy Has
1965, 3 h 3 minIn Saragossa, in the midst of the clamour of Napoleo’s campaign, two officers of estranged parties are amicably hunching over an old manuscript… It is 1739. Captain Alfons van Worden traverses the wild Sierra Morena mountains. He pays no attention to warnings about demons, invisible hands that fall into the void, and deserted inns where evil ghosts wander. He stops at one of them for one night, unaware of initiating a whole series of unusual and terrible events which will penetrate his uncomplicated psyche. A brilliant adaptation of one of the greatest works of the world fantasy literature, a novel by the 18th century writer, scientist and traveller, Jan Potocki.
