I Hate Mondays

The absurdities of the early 1970s (“the age of Edward Gierek”) presented in a funny manner. Another Monday in Warsaw: German measles in a kindergarten, shortage in a marriage bureau – one foreigner is missing but there are plenty of shy girls full of complexes. A visitor from the country desperately seeks spare parts for his combine harvester but suddenly the shops offer toilet paper so everyone walks around the city laden with the paper, showing it like hunter’s trophies. Lifts break down and a new elementary school is to open. An absurdity follows an absurdity but ultimately all the problems are solved. Somehow...

In Desert and Wilderness

A screen adaptation of the last finished novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Nel was modelled on his friend’s 10-year-old adopted daughter, whereas the original engineer Tarkowski was engineer Mieczysław Gieniusz, who worked at the construction of the Suez Canal. The only son of Gieniusz was abducted by slave traders and he has never been seen again. Sienkiewicz used his story when writing “In Desert and Wilderness” and Gavin Hood successfully transferred it onto the screen.

Influenza

A action-packed story about a group of clairvoyants, acting in Poznań at the end of World War I to help in the recovery of the Polish state. During a seance in a hotel room the telepaths are saving Ignacy Paderewski who is on a ship bound for Poland. They want to protect him against the attack of a dangerous medium working for the Prussian army. For Paderewski is not only a world-renowned virtuoso pianist but also a statesman, the symbol of Polishness and the future Prime Minister of Poland.

A melodrama unfolds at the whirling table as love is budding between the protagonists, love which will require the highest sacrifice there is.

An alternative version of history, parallel worlds and fun with the convention of a conspiracy-based thriller and black comedy ridiculing the bohemian world and the bourgeoisie. The film is a mixture of historic events and fiction, recounting the successful uprising.
