The Circus Connection

In the middle of Augustów Primeval Forest there is a stud farm of tarpans – small wild forest horses, found in the wild only in Poland. An old, abandoned fort near the port in Gdynia is used by smugglers and international wild animals dealers as a hideout to keep live stock. On a farm next to it, Stadnicki breeds horses and one day a forest tarpan escapes there.

The Decalogue I

Krzysztof is a middle-aged man, his son Pawel is about eleven. The mother is away from home: she has gone abroad to earn some money or perhaps just to visit her friends. Normal life goes on. The boy goes to school and is soft on a class¬-mate; together with his father, he wins,a game of chess against the woman champion of Poland; when Krzysztof -lectures' at the University in the afternoon, he always takes his son with him. In the morning, father and son take exercise together.

Watching some of a hospital ward head's morning duties, it is easy to guess that they constitute his everyday routine. He is an old and lonely man who has arranged his life in a way never to disturb anybody. He closes his eyes for a short while and holds on to the bathtub rim when he pours hot water out of the too heavy pots. The viewer learns the reasons of his loneliness and his past history from a story the old doctor tells his charwoman: like a series, an episode every week.

The Christmas Eve - a happy day to be spent with one s family. Janusz, his wife and two small children go to a night service and sing along with the crowd that has gathered in the church. A sullen woman watches him with sharp, evil eyes. She is lonely - this fact is only too apparent. She keeps staring at Janusz until he feels her eyes on himself and turns to look at her. Immediately he hides behind the crowd.Back home, Janusz disconnects the phone. Christmas greetings, present, champagne.

Anka is a pretty and lively girl. A jug full of water in her hand, she steals up to a sleeping man, planning to douse him according to an Easter Monday tradition. She hesitates as she notices a yellow envelope on the table, next to a passport and air ticket. The girl must have seen that envelope before; now, she grows pensive for a moment, holding it. But soon everything is back to normal, and it is now time for the man, wet all over, to take his revenge.
