Andrzej Wajda was a film and theatre director, screenwriter, and production designer. Recipient of the Honorary Academy Award. He made his directorial debut in 1954 with A Generation, a film depicting the lives of young people from Warsaw’s suburbs during the Nazi occupation. His Kanal (1956) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958) gave rise to the Polish Film School and established him as one of the most significant directors of a new generation of European filmmakers. He died in 2016.
