Submissions for the Atmospheric Film Award until 4th September!

Atmospheric Film Award is proposed and funded by the Swedish company Electrolux, the General Partner of the 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. It’s the second year that this award is presented to a film for implementing and promoting green practices on a set at all stages of production: screenplay, preparations, set, shooting, and post-production. This year’s edition of the award can be presented to any film submitted to the Main Competition of the 48th Polish Film Festival, the Short Film Competition, and the Microbudget Film Competition. The winners will receive statuettes and cash prizes of PLN 15,000 each. The submissions started on 8th August and will be open until 4th September.

The unique power of filmmaking

The ecological trend to shoot films in the least environmentally taxing way is reinforcing its position in the global and Polish film industry. Furthermore, we can use a film as a medium for an eco-friendly message. Production methods are changing, as well as our way of thinking.

Filmmaking is an art with an unique power of shaping the audience’s awareness. That’s why the fact that so many creators consciously act towards a greener film set is such a delight. A great example of this shift are all of last year’s submissions for the first edition of the Atmospheric Film Award and its winners who, while working on their next projects, highlighted that the award served as a motivation for them to lean choose ecological solutions.

I’m delighted that the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia is where the Atmospheric Film Award is presented. We’ve been one of the “green” events for years and each year we come up with new initiatives to help the environment. Electrolux, the partner of this award, shares our drive for environmental action. There are so many different groups involved in the organisation of the festival that we can interest with the green ideas — it’s easy to imagine how much is there to do and to win! – comments Joanna Łapińska, Artistic Director of the 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

Atmospheric Film 2023

It’s the third time that Electrolux teams up with the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia to support environmentally friendly changes. As the General Partner of this Polish celebration of cinematography, they want to concentrate their actions even more on promoting green solutions in filmmaking. As an effect, they’re funding and presenting the Atmospheric Film Award for the most environmentally friendly productions for the second time.

Last year’s Atmospheric Film Award went to The Hatcher directed by Grzegorz Mołda and to Alcibiades directed by Robert Kwilman for the short film category.

Electrolux is the first brand of household appliances that is so engaged in promoting ecological solutions and behaviours. Obviously, it all started in Sweden, where love and respect towards the environment are common. Sustainability, respectful resource management, and reducing the negative environmental impact are all priorities for Electrolux. We express them by designing and providing the most modern appliances and technologies, especially for washing and drying, that treat fabrics with care, thus prolonging their lifespan. Our promotion of circular fashion has led us to the red carpet and the Festival in Gdynia – we’ve become a partner of the event. We encourage Polish stars to wear outfits they already own, not to promote consumerism and so-called fast fashion. Additionally, we’ve initiated this new way of honouring environmentally-sensitive filmmakers. The Atmospheric Film Award for the most eco-friendly productions will be presented for the second time, and we’re eager to see what the creators will have to show this year. In the pilot edition last year we’ve had 6 submissions, and this year we’re counting on much more. – says Izabela Sługocka, Brand Activation Manager CARE (washing machines and dryers) of Electrolux Poland.

In 2023 any film submitted to the Main Competition of the 48th Polish Film Festival, the Short Film Competition, and the Microbudget Film Competition can apply for the Atmospheric Film Award. Similarly to last year’s edition, the award is presented in two categories: for short films and feature-length films. For the feature-length films category, any film submitted to the Main Competition and the Microbudget Film Competition can be submitted.

The jury, which will include representatives of the Polish Film Festival, Polish Producers Alliance, Film for Climate Initiative and the Electrolux brand, will evaluate the documentation and description of the actions taken to neutralise the environmental impact of the filmmaking process. The jury members will scrutinise the steps taken in several areas, including: office, logistics, materials (props, costumes), waste management, catering, energy, equipment, and post-production.

Green thinking in filmmaking starts with the screenplay. In the submissions we’ll look for more eco-friendly production decisions, as well as new ecologically responsible styles of filmmaking that may help with environment conservation and keeping its natural resources for the present and future generations – says Stanisław Zaborowski, Vice-President of Polish Producers Alliance.
