The beginning of the sixties. With the Cuban Missile Crisis in full swing, American secret services kidnap an outstanding mathematician, Joshua Mansky. The forgotten alcohol-abusing genius is to take part in a chess duel against a Soviet master, Gawryłow, at an international tournament at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. However, the competition only serves as a cover for a game of spies. Once the allies turn out to be enemies and it is hard to know whom to trust, Mansky has to make a decisive move which is to stop the nuclear conflict. The film is the director’s feature-length debut.
