The story takes place in the turbulent years following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The main character, Nina, is a charismatic woman who takes in a homeless Russian drifter who claims to be a writer. Hoping for a new life together, she quickly discovers that the mystical land of Poltava – where witches live alongside ordinary people and the dead speak to the living – gradually reveals the true nature of the man she has let into her home.
