Based on actual events from the final years of the life of Nikifor (1895–1968), one of the five most eminent naïve painters in the world. Nikifor, actually Epifaniusz Drowniak, was despised, misunderstood and ridiculed throughout most of his life. In Krynica he was perceived as crazy, people were either afraid of him or laughed at him. In 1960 Marian Włosiński, a young artist, crosses his path. Initially, Włosiński wants to get rid of a nuisance that Nikifor seems to him, but on getting to know him better, he discovers his hidden genius. He abandons his own painting ambitions and taking care of Nikifor becomes the meaning of his life.
