Following his unexpected death, Antoni Zyro, a lawyer, appears amongst the living as an invisible presence. He wishes to secretly lead the defence of Darek, a young worker accused of organising a strike during martial law. Under Antoni’s influence, his wife, Urszula, advises Darek’s wife to hire Labrador. Labrador’s defence strategy – downplaying the case and emphasising the ambiguity of the situation – diverges from Antoni’s approach, which is to make both sides realise the need for an agreement. Darek refuses to accept this line of defence. He also rejects the proposal of a trainee lawyer, Miecio, who suggests extreme hostility towards the regime and generating as much publicity around the case as possible.
