The Decalogue IX

Roman is a man under forty. For several years, he suspected what will now be proved by many tests, analyses and examinations: tie is an impotent and it is too late for any treatment to be successful. This is what he feared but now he knows for sure: his happy marriage to Hanka, based on partnership, is bound to shatter. He tells Hanka the truth openly, just as he heard it himself. He is a doctor, too, a cardio surgeon, and realizes the diagnosis is final.

He orders an enlargement of an old andcrumpled picture of a girl, taken on the occasion of her first Communion.Frozen, he has coffee in a hotel bar.The taxi driver makes rounds of the town in his extra clean car, looking for a passenger.

Tomek is a boy of nineteen, Magda - a woman of thirty. She does not even know of Tomek’s existence. But all the time he loves her desperately. They live across the street. Every evening, Tomek adjusts a field glass. Magda lives a free, light and careless life.As a succession of men appear in her flat, Tomek lowers the field glass. No doubt such scenes excited him before - but he was not in love with her then.

A girl of five screams at night in her dream, haunted by some unknown and adult terror. Two women bend over her, of which only the older one is able to soothe the child. The younger woman stops her ears in the hall not to hear the song which has already soothed the girl: "Mummy’s with you, dear."The older woman, Ewa, is the mother of the younger one, Majka. There is a father, too, but he does not matter in the story. Stefan builds an organ in his small room.

Artur is the younger of two brothers. As he screams the text of a pop song into the microphone, the audience raise their arms above their heads, shaking to the violent rhythm. Jerzy is the elder brother: as he elbows his way through the crowd towards the platform, dressed in a smart coat, we notice the two brothers have nothing in common.Their father has died.

1793. Prussian troops enter Greater Poland under the partition treaties. A Stranger arrives at a convent-prison to take Jakub, an epileptic and failed regicide, with him. From now on the mysterious man guides Jakub’s fate and, having supplied him with a razor for “cleansing”, will persuade him to commit a series of crimes.

A black comedy about a man who kidnaps dogs for ransom to later return them basking in the glory of a saviour. One day he kidnaps an Alsatian that turns out to be a stray dog.
