The film is a psychological study. Franciszek Retman comes from the provinces to study in Warsaw. He discovers the city and meets new people. Hearing that his friend Małgosia is pregnant, he decides to marry her. Unable to support his family as a student, he suspends his studies but eventually returns to university, earns a doctorate, and achieves stability in life. Only his heart ultimately gives out…
