Gdynia in the Leading Role. Quiz of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia – Polish Film Festival

We invite all fans of the Festival, Gdynia and Polish cinema to take part in a quiz on films made in Gdynia and on the Polish Film Festival! The competition is being organised to mark two special occasions – the Polish Film Festival is embarking on its next fifty years, and the City of Gdynia is celebrating its centenary!

The competition will be held in two stages:

Stage 1 – online quiz – 28^th August 2026

Stage 2 – the final – 12^th September 2026. The Leszek Kopeć Gdynia Film Centre, Warszawa screenng room. First, the 30 finalists will take part in a multimedia test; then, the 10 participants with the highest scores will qualify for the Grand Final.

The Polish Film Festival is a time when there is an exceptional amount of talk about Polish cinema. Every year since 1987, Gdynia has become the capital of Polish cinema. It is here that Polish and international guests and figures from the film industry – filmmakers, actors and actresses, and producers – gather for the Festival. It is here that the latest Polish films are screened and the most prestigious Polish film awards are presented. But Gdynia and cinema are linked by much more than the Festival itself. Filmmakers and film scholars have been drawn – and continue to be drawn – by the city’s locations and history. As early as the interwar period, when the ‘city of the sea and dreams’ was coming into being, the camera’s lens was turned here – towards the dynamically developing maritime capital of the Republic of Poland. Works such as Path of Shame by Mieczysław Krawicz and Alfred Niemirski (1929) and Baltic Rhapsody by Leonard Buczkowski (1935) were produced at that time.

In the post-war years, there was a growing number of films set against a backdrop of the sound of the waves, the cries of seagulls and moving stories. Zbigniew Cybulski said, Goodbye, See You Tomorrow. Some visitors sailed in from America, whilst others, setting sail, were seen off by a crowd at the Maritime Station. Someone was searching for his wife; the mystery of the enigmatic address 8 Zielona Street had to be unravelled; a certain Carmen entered the world of crime to protect her children; and ten-year-old Oskar was searching for treasure in Gdynia harbour. There was also a film depicting the tragic events of December ’70. And these are just a handful of the cinematic stories that were made in Gdynia.

Which part of Gdynia ‘played’ the role of a railway station in the Turkish capital, and which one that of a desert island? What scam did Czesław Wiśniak, played by Piotr Fronczewski, pull off at the Market Halls? Which famous modernist building ‘starred’ in the latest war drama produced for TVP? Take part in a wonderful cinematic adventure! The quiz isn’t just a chance to have fun, but also an opportunity to discover Gdynia as a city of film. Especially as Gdynia is celebrating its centenary this year!

The Gdynia in the Leading Role quiz is held under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of the City of Gdynia. The 51^st Polish Film Festival will take place from 21^st to 26^th September 2026 in Gdynia. The Festival is produced by the Pomeranian Film Foundation in Gdynia.
