By accident, Mary discovers a drawing of a mermaid on the wall of her small flat in Warsaw. It turns out that it was drawn by Pablo Picasso during his visit in 1948! The woman is delighted but does not realise that the Mermaid is going to turn her life upside down. Her next-door neighbour is an elderly retired journalist, Radomski, who can still remember Picasso’s visit. He’s not happy about the discovery of the Mermaid. Memories of events past come back to him and the kind he has already managed to forget about at that. He reminisces on Picasso’s visit and on the fate of the neighbours who, in exchange for the flat they got, had to show the Mermaid to all the people who were curious to see it. The film is inspired by true events.
