December 1981. Professor Joan Andrews, a well-known and controversial psychiatrist from London, arrives in Warsaw for an international psychiatric congress. During her stay in Poland, she is cared for by a young Ph.D. student Alina, full of idealism and energy. While Professor Andrews is giving her talk, a political protest erupts. Forced to flee, she ends up at Alina’s flat in Ursynów district. When martial law is declared the next day, the world around stops functioning: phones go silent, streets are empty, the city turns into a cage. Joan witnesses a young opposition activist being killed. An accidental photo she takes makes her a target pursued by the secret police. In a foreign country, where anyone could be an informer and the language poses a barrier, the woman must rely on strangers and her own intuition. With the help of Alina and Alina’s underground friends, Joan tries to smuggle the incriminating evidence to the British Embassy. The more the paranoia increases, the more the professor starts to question her own perception: is what she’s seeing real or a dream?
